3 – Ca’ Pesaro

3 – Ca’ Pesaro. Overlooking the Grand Canal in Venice, it houses both the International Modern Art Gallery and the Orient*l (Far Eastern) Art Museum.

A huge and majestic Baroque marble palace located in the district of Santa Croce, the building was originally designed by Baldassarre Longhena, in the 17th century and was completed at the beginning of the 18th. An order of enormous pillars creates the impression of double loggias, making this palace a colossal one.

With stunning architecture and canal views from the palace windows, it has a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. Less crowded than Venice’s more famous landmarks, it contains rich eclectic collections spanning continents and centuries.

If you’re into art, history, or just want a break from the tourist-heavy spots, Ca’ Pesaro is a gem.

What to see Ca’ Pesaro

It is interesting to notice that Ca’ Pesaro also played, during the first two decades of the 20th century, a revolutionary role in the Italian artistic scene; having been a launch pad for young rebellious artists, that wanted to break with tradition. The Gallery of Modern Art comprises ten rooms, each one dedicated to a specific topic or historic time.
Masterpieces by Kandinsky, Mirò, Boccioni, Morandi, de Chirico, Fattori, and de Nittis decorate the walls of most of the rooms, while the Central Hall is dedicated to works from the first Venice Biennale up to the 1950’s. The last room is devoted to Contemporary Art, with temporary exhibitions by young artists happening frequently.

The Museum has three floors
  • First floor: 19th–20th century paintings and sculptures
  • Second floor: Abstract and contemporary installations
  • Third floor: Orient*l Art Museum
Modern Art Highlights
  • Gustav Klimt’s Judith II (1909)
  • Works by Kandinsky, Chagall, Rodin, Bonnard, de Chirico, Morandi, and many others
  • Italian masterpieces by Boccioni, Casorati, Martini, Rossi, and more
Orient*l Art Collection

The upper floor hosts the Orient*l Art Museum. Venice has played throughout history a crucial role in economic trade and cultural exchange, especially with the Far East and has been a bridge between the West and Eastern cultures. More than 30,000 objects from Japan, Indonesia, and China are housed on this floor; taking the visitor back to the time when Venice, was a key player in the economic world scene.

  • Japanese swords and armour
  • Chinese ceramics
  • Indonesian textiles
  • All collected by Prince Enrico di Borbone during his travels
