The Venetian lagoon is sustained by a delicate ecosystem; channels and shallows kept clean by the Adriatic tides sweeping in, whilst the rivers feeding into it have been diverted, in order to avoid silting up. 

It was an unprecedented “acqua alta”, with waters peaking at 194 cm; making it the worst flood in its history.
