It is the most important waterway of the city and effectively splits the city into two sides.  It is also known as “Canal Grande” (Italian), “Canal Grando” (Venetian) and “Canalasso” (Historical).

The Grand Canal has only four bridges along its entire length: the Ponte degli Scalzi, the Ponte dell’ Accademia, the Ponte di Costituzione and the Ponti di Rialto.
