Peggy Guggenheim Collection – What to expect
If you ever find yourself in Venice, this museum is a must-see – not just for the art, but for the story of a woman who shaped modern art history with flair and fearlessness.
Origins & Location
- Housed in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, an 18th-century unfinished palace.
- This was Peggy Guggenheim’s personal residence for 30 years until her death in 1979.
- Located in the Dorsoduro district, it’s one of Venice’s most visited attractions.
The Collection
- Features 20th-century European and American art, including:
- Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism
- Works by Picasso, Duchamp, Klee, Magritte, Kandinsky, and Jackson Pollock
- Includes Peggy’s personal acquisitions from 1938–1946, many bought during WWII.
- Also showcases pieces from the Hannelore B. and Rudolph B. Schulhof Collection and Collezione Gianni Mattioli, with Italian Futurist masterpieces.
Peggy Guggenheim: The Collector
- Heiress to the Guggenheim mining fortune; her father died on the Titanic.
- Married artist Max Ernst, and mingled with avant-garde circles across Europe and the U.S.
- Known for her flamboyant style, eccentric sunglasses, and love of dogs—her ashes are buried in the museum’s garden alongside her pets.
Legacy & Impact
- Became part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1980.
- Attracts over 400,000 visitors annually, second only to the Doge’s Palace in Venice.
- Directed by Karole Vail, Peggy’s granddaughter, since 2017.

The museum is open daily from 10 am–6 pm. Closed on Tuesdays and December 25.
The ticket office is open from 10 am–5 pm. Last entrance at 5 pm.
Closing of the museum starts at 5:50 pm.
