About 10 kilometres north-east of Venice; is connected by a wooden pedestrian bridge to Burano and is its sixth “sestiere”.

 It covers the island’s military role in the defence of Venice and its lagoon islands; together with the urbanisation and development of the island in the 19th and 20th centuries, as a suburb of Venice and its most famous holiday resort.

This post covers more general descriptive, historical and cultural information, to help maximise your appreciation of what the island has to offer. Just a few kilometres south of Venice, it has a quite different atmosphere and appeal; that makes a great day away from the city, especially in the warmer months.

A long thin island, forming a barrier or “lidi”; between the southern Venetian Lagoon and the Adriatic Sea. The main industries of the island are market gardening, fishing, tourism and lace making.

It has been a hospice for pilgrims, a convent, powder store and a hospital for infectious disease. Currently it is a private regeneration and development project, with a theme of “well-being, rest and recuperation”.

For centuries, the island of San Clemente, housed a monastic settlement, more recently a mental asylum and since 2016, a luxury hotel complex.

 An artificial island created in 1870, the island of Sacca Sessola has been a fuel store, hospital and since 2015; a luxury hotel and spa resort.

Once housed a monastery of Benedictine monks and later an asylum for people suffering from psychiatric illness

Close to Venice yet abandoned since 1960; has now been developed into a fully serviced marina and green recreational space; popular with families and children and for hosting events.
